Brady vs Rodgers Week 9 Preview
One of the most anticipated games of the 2018-19 NFL season will take place this Sunday, with Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers heading to Foxboro, Massachusetts to take on Tom Brady and the New England Patriots.
The two best quarterbacks in a quarterback-driven league will face off head-to-head for just the 2nd time in their illustrious careers, with Rodgers and the Packers winning their first match-up 26-21 back in 2014 at Lambeau Field. This time, however, the game will be played in New England, where the Patriots have yet to lose this year, whereas the Packers are 0-3 on the road so far this season.
The fact that this is only the 2nd time that these two quarterbacks are playing is by no fault of Tom Brady. In 2014 and 2016 the Patriots made the Super Bowl, while the Packers lost in the NFC Championship to the Seattle Seahawks and Atlanta Falcons both those years. We were robbed of a Brady-Rodgers Super Bowl twice now, and we can only hope we're able to see it once before these legends decide to retire.
Ironically, the main key this week for both these teams won't be how their terrific quarterbacks play, rather it will be if either defence will be able to force stops. In games with two elite quarterbacks, the team that can keep the other teams quarterback on the sidelines longest will likely win. I predict the Patriots will play a lot of pass-prevent Nickel defensive packages, seeing if the Packers have the discipline to consistently run the ball, or if they would rather have Aaron Rodgers throw the ball regardless.
This game has a lot of the same feeling to me as the Patriots-Chiefs game from week 6, with the Patriots winning 43-40 on a last second field goal from Stephen Gostowski. In that game, the Patriots got off to a great start, taking a 24-9 lead into halftime. The Chiefs came out flying in the 3rd quarter, scoring touchdowns on two big passing plays to Kareem Hunt and Tyreek Hill, respectively. The Patriots ultimately won, but the Chiefs showed the blueprint on how to stay with the Patriots in Foxboro. You have to take advantage of when their defence makes mistakes, and Aaron Rodgers is obviously very capable of doing that.
Final Score Prediction: 38-35 Patriots
